Scouting as been a continuing force beginning with Barbara's early experience as a girl scout, counselor, and leader; extending to Karl's stint as a scoutmaster and commissioner, Jan and Fritz' eagle status and more recently to Cory, Riley and Cally's activities.

In early days biking was much enjoyed, especially with the American Youth Hostels including trips locally out to the Wilbur Nash farm in Brookeville, MD to shuck corn in the fall and a biking tour of New England the year before they married.

The Appalachian Trail was a frequent destination - Karl and Barbara were active with the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club, especially with the Mountaineering Section. Karl was a member of the Camping and Hiking Equipment Committee.
