     Benjamin Stoddert was a major in the Pennsylvania Regiment during the Revolution, he was badly wounded at the Battle of Brandywine and served after that as secretary of the Continental Board of War. After the war he established himself as a merchant in Georgetown, Maryland. At the request of George Washington he purchased key parcels of land in the area that would become the Nation's Capital before the formal decision to establish the city drove up the prices there. He then transferred the parcels to the government. Under President John Adams he became the first Secretary of the US Navy, 1798 - 1801. In later years he returned to private life, but was only partially able to recover from business reverses that had accumulated during his public service .

     William Stone was an early English pioneer and settler, first on the Eastern Shore of Virginia after 1628 and then in Maryland about 1648. He served as the third provincial Governor (the first protestant in that position) of the Maryland colony 1649-1655 and was deposed during the Commonwealth period. When the propietorship was reestablished in 1660 he was granted substantial land which he named Poynton Manor, on Nanjemoy Creek in what is now Charles County, for his faithful service to the Calverts. His great grandchildren later made many contributions in the establishment of Maryland as an American state.
